An Accra High Court has granted bail to the Lebanese national, Rabih Haddad, alleged to have raped his Ghanaian house help.

According to the court presided over by Justice Kofi Dorgu, enough time has been given to the prosecution to gather evidence, but they have failed to do so, hence the decision.

The judge further dismissed the argument by the prosecution that the accused person could abscond if granted bail. The accused person was granted bail to the tune of five hundred thousand cedis (GHc500,000) with two sureties to be justified.

He is also to deposit his passport with the registrar of the court.

Rabih Haddad, 39, who took ill in December after his arrest, has been on admission at the Police Hospital till date.

Background

He is alleged to have lured the nineteen year old house help into one of the bedrooms and tried having sexual intercourse with her when his wife and other occupants of the house had gone out.

Her attempts to resist his advances reportedly infuriated Haddad, who slapped her and then struck her neck after which he dragged her to the bed and forcibly had sex with her.

Wife of Lebanese rape suspect weeps in court

The wife of Rabih Haddad last week broke down in tears in open court, after the hearing of a bail application for her husband was adjourned.

That adjournment was due to the unavailability of the State Attorney handling the case on the grounds of ill-health.
