Reports indicated that, shoals of fish belonging to a Chinese-owned fish farming company – Fujian Farm – were contaminated, compelling NADMO and the National Security to destroy them to avoid letting it onto the market.
Speaking on the development and in an attempt to allay fear among tilapia lovers, Chief Director at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Professor Francis Nunoo said “The public can go on and enjoy tilapia but buy from identifiable place”.
He also said “Is an isolated incident so for the identified farm, it’s been quarantined and it’s under supervision. There are officers there already and we added supplementary fish beds and aquaculture from Accra to go and help contain the situation, ensure that no dead or contaminated fish goes out. We will continue to monitor and you’ve picked up samples to test the quality of the fish and to test the water quality and all other perimeters before we will be able to come out categorically and say that, this is the problem”.
Meanwhile an embargo, restricting the buying and distribution of fish from the affected farm has been effected.
“Today, another committee is going there, the minister herself will also be going there, there is right now an embargo those vanning, and so nothing is going out”.
