Two persons have been reported dead at Akanteng, a farming community near Asamankese, following a five-hour downpour in the area.
The floods, which submerged several houses also displaced thousands of residents at Awaham, Kobriso, Ekoso, Brekumanso and Akanteng all in the West Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region.
This is the third flooding that has hit Akanteng in less than a month.
Farmlands, roads and schools have been severely affected.
An apartment in which a mother and her two children lived, caved in and collapsed after their home was submerged.
Unfortunately, the woman and one of her children did not survive.
Some affected residents who spoke to vipi News expressed fear that more rains in the coming days will worsen their plight.
“I cannot explain the reasons for the flood but the rains began at 4:00am. It locked me up in my kitchen. At about 6:00pm we heard the rains had caused floods in the town. I have not been there but I am told a lot of properties have been destroyed. A mother and child have even drowned as a result.”
“We are afraid another disaster could occur because the rains are not stopping anytime soon. We plead with authorities to come to our aid. All our properties have been destroyed by the floods. Our houses have been destroyed and the items in the houses have all been washed away. Two people have died- a mother and her child. We were able to retrieve the two bodies just this morning.”
The Municipal Chief Executive Officer for the West Akyem Municipality, Seth Oduro Boadu, who visited the area to assess the extent of damage in an interview expressed concern about the perennial floods in the communities and promised the Assembly will help to provide relief items.
Meanwhile, authorities of NADMO have visited the affected areas to assess the condition of residents.
This yer’s rains have caused several lives across the country with about 35 people reported dead in the three northern regions, also due to the spillage from the Bagre Dam.
