Court issues warrant for arrest of Sosu

The Kaneshie District Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of Madina MP, Francis Sosu.

This was after the MP failed to appear in court for the third time since criminal charges were filed against him.

On Monday, his lawyer, Victor Adawudu, told the court the MP is attending a parliamentary committee meeting and was, therefore, unable to show up in court.

Prosecutor, ASP Sylvestre Asare, told the court that it was clear that for such a criminal matter, the court had the discretion to issue a warrant for the arrest of the MP.

He insisted the MP cannot send someone to represent him in a criminal matter.

“He has a clear intention and has demonstrated that to this court. Therefore, it amounts to disrespect to this court,” ASP Asare said.

He insisted that no one is above the court.

Mr Adawudu insisted the Mp was attending parliamentary duties and was not staying away from the court.

The magistrate handling the matter, Oheneba Kuffour, asked the Prosecutor if his team had so far obtained a statement from the MP. ASP Asare said no such statement had been received.

Mr Adawudu told the court the MP had not made any effort to provide a statement because the matter went beyond the police.

ASP Asare then urged the court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the MP.

“You have so many powers, and nobody can undermine you, and you are the only person who can invoke section 167. This court should not be used to mark register.” ASP Asare said.

Mr Adawudu insisted he had filed processes at a higher court challenging the appropriateness of the charges filed against the MP.

He asked that the case is adjourned and that the court must be satisfied that the MP is deliberating refusing to show up before issuing any order.

Magistrate Oheneba Kuffour issued the warrant for arrest, noting that

“There is too much deception in the system.”

He then adjourned the case to January 12, 2022.

The legislator is accused of unlawfully blocking the public roads and causing destruction to public property during a street protest.
