Yemisi Parker-Osei, who started the petition has already received 22,567 signatures as the rage against sexual abuse intensifies.
The petition to be delivered to the Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye, Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and other public offices, seeks justice for people who have been sexually abused, but could not get their perpetrators punished due to the interference of traditional leaders.
#Nomoresilence has been trending together with other hashtags since three weeks ago after Joy News broke the story about the plight of a four-year-old girl who was defiled at Assin Adadientem in the Central Region.
The four-year-old girl mentioned one Kwabena as the perpetrator of the crime, but when her mother reported the incident to the chief of the village, he said the gods had declared the suspect innocent.
He, therefore, made no attempts to investigate the case or speak to the suspect. He told the disgruntled mother there was nothing he could do about it.
This petition seeks to correct the wrongs of a system Yemisi believes, has “failed our children. Let not the deaths and suffering of child rape victims be in vain. Let’s put this matter firmly at the top of the agenda! Every child is significant irrespective of wealth or lack thereof!”
Yemisi adds that “Let a fresh campaign begin and succeed where others have failed! Child abuse can only be satisfactorily eradicated and minimised when it is challenged! No more ignorance and avoidance! No more cover ups and bribes! No more abuse and violence!”
