Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku, has proven to be incompetent in managing security in the region and should be removed, Zachariah Musah, spokesperson for the Sarik Zongo Youth, has said.

His comment follows the shooting and killing of some seven alleged armed robbers by the police at Manso Nkwanta, on Wednesday, 18 July 2018.

Some irate zongo youth of Asawase, on Thursday, 19 July 2018, were reported to have torched the Asawase police station in the Asokore Mampong municipality over the incident.

The station was set on fire by over 50 young men around 11:30am while police officers were busily working in their offices.

The officers and complainants at the station had to run for their lives after they saw a thick smoke billowing through the windows of the station.

The officers had to fire a warning shot to disperse the youth. Some artisans who work near the station were said to have intervened to quench the fire with sachet water bags since there was no fire extinguisher in the station.

The youth were said to have poured a gallon of petrol on the floor of the police station and set it ablaze with a lighter.

A net on the station's window and a tricycle packed near the station had some burns. A joint police and military team was deployed to the station to protect and maintain order. The rampaging youth also burnt car tyres and blocked some roads with cement blocks.

Roads which were blocked include Amakom to Central mosque, Denkyem to Central mosque, Sawaba to central mosque, and central mosque to Aboabo station.

But speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Friday, 20 July 2018, Musah denied the youth set the station on fire.

He said: “We have been hearing stories that the police station was burnt but no police station was burnt.

“We want to tell the IGP, the Interior Minister that the Ashanti Regional Police Commander has proven to be incompetent, he has shown that the region is too much for him to handle, and, so, he should be removed because when he came to address the press on the matter, you could see that the regional police commander was incoherent and that he couldn’t even allow journalists to ask questions.

"How will you address a press conference and tell journalists not to ask questions? This is not done anywhere. The attitude of the police in the region can be likened to what the police in the USA do to the black community.

“It appears there are two sets of laws now: one for the people living in zongos and one for the others. This senseless and lawless act of killing innocent zongo youth must come to an end.”
